And for a specific reason: not only was a maypole erected in Poing this year, but also in their kindergarten. The “Kloana” wanted to see how the “Großn” do it.
When they arrived at the Stüberl, the pre-school children were welcomed by Bennet Bauer, the chairman of the Poing/Angelbrechting boys' association.
He immediately showed the children the 35 meter long, almost completely painted maypole. Unfortunately, the children were a little disappointed to discover that their maypole was a lot smaller!
Bennet took a lot of time to explain everything about the tradition of putting up the maypole, how it is painted, which signs are attached to it and what happens if the maypole is stolen. The children listened intently and told Bennet everything they had already prepared for their maypole festival. They also reported that the children from the neighboring kindergarten stole their maypole and they had to pay them a Brotzeit to get it back.
The children were also allowed into the parlor (the actual Stüberl), music and disco lights were turned on and everyone danced wildly, just like the “big ones” usually do. At the end there were gummy bears and a wooden pendant from the Poinger Maibaumstüberl.
Many thanks to Bennet for taking the time for us! It was great fun and we learned a lot more about the traditions surrounding the maypole.
