On the trail of snails

After the mild and wet winter, many snails were able to survive the cold season, leading to talk in the media this year of a "snail year" or even a "snail plague".

The nursery children also discovered numerous snails in our garden and showed great interest in these small creatures. This led to our exciting project on the topic of snails.
Together, we collected some snails and observed them in a jar during morning circle time. It was great to see how brave some of the children were and dared to pick up the snails.

In the course of the activity, we expanded our knowledge about the life of snails. We learned where snails live, named their body parts and discovered what they eat. It was particularly interesting to discover that the snails had nibbled on our strawberries in the raised bed - a clear indication of their appetite!

We also looked at pictures of the largest snail in the world and learned that it is called the agate snail. This amazed the children and stimulated their imagination.

At the end of the activity, the children were allowed to get creative and paint snails using the stamp printing technique. It was an all-round successful project that not only expanded the children's knowledge about snails, but also encouraged their creativity. We look forward to more exciting discoveries in nature with our nursery children!
